How chargeable weight is determined

For services that use dimensional-weight rating, the basic decision is chargeable weight = greater of actual weight or dimensional weight. Actual weight reflects mass on the scale; dimensional weight reflects how much capacity a package consumes. The carrier then applies its own rounding, minimums, service rules and rate card to the resulting billable quantity.

The calculator above is useful for identical packages. For mixed shipments, the calculation should not simply compare one grand-total actual weight with one grand-total DIM weight. Where a carrier rates packages individually, the higher figure needs to be determined for each package or cargo line and then summed.

Why mixed shipments need line-by-line calculation

Imagine two packages. Package A weighs 30 kg but has only 10 kg of dimensional weight. Package B weighs 5 kg but has 25 kg of dimensional weight. Their correct planning chargeable weights are 30 kg and 25 kg, giving 55 kg in total.

If someone incorrectly aggregated first, total actual weight would be 35 kg and total DIM weight would also be 35 kg—understating the shipment to 35 kg. This is why ShipMeasure's mixed-SKU workspace evaluates the actual-vs-DIM decision by cargo line before adding the result.

Why the divisor changes the answer

At 5,000 cm³/kg, every 5,000 cubic centimetres represents one kilogram of dimensional weight. At 6,000, the same volume represents less dimensional weight. There is no safe reason to assume that a generic “air freight divisor” or parcel divisor applies to every carrier, lane or contract. Use the exact published or quoted rule whenever the calculation is financially important.

What ShipMeasure does—and does not—reproduce

ShipMeasure calculates the geometry and the actual-vs-DIM comparison. It does not attempt to imitate every carrier's package measurement rounding, half-kilogram or whole-kilogram rounding, minimum charge, oversize surcharge, service restriction or negotiated contract. Those rules can materially change the final invoice even when the underlying dimensional-weight formula is the same.

Use chargeable weight as a decision signal

A persistent gap between scale weight and DIM weight tells you that packaging volume is potentially expensive. That can guide carton redesign, product bundling or service comparison. If scale weight already exceeds DIM weight, shrinking the carton may still improve cube utilisation, but it will not reduce the simple DIM-based billable weight until the freight rule itself changes.
